Open Registration Indonesian Peat Prize

Open Registration Indonesian Peat Prize

The Prize

The goal of the Indonesian Peat Prize is not to make a perfect map of peatland, but to quickly find the most useful technology and methodology (solution) possible for mapping. Usefulness is determined by the degree to which a map is accurate, affordable and quick to create.

A successful prize will identify a transparent, credible and location-agnostic methodology for mapping Indonesian peatland extent and thickness.

Along with their invaluable contributions to establishing a national standard for mapping peatlands, a $1 million prize purse will be awarded to the winning team.

Who Can Enter?

Students, engineers, consultants, product directors, scientists, research institutions, companies, universities, civil society organizations, non-governmental organizations —anyone with a great idea who meets the criteria is invited to join. People or teams from around the world can join forces with Indonesian partners.

Many applicants will have an existing prototype or idea that’s ready for implementation and testing. However, we welcome emerging ideas. Teams who have the skills and knowledge to create a solution, but don’t have a clear idea yet of how they might solve this challenge, are able to apply. You’ll just need to have a testable prototype ready by the time the Solution Development Phase begins in June 2016.

Registration

Registration and qualification starts February 2016 and goes until May 2016.

Once you submit your registration, the Scientific Advisory Board will review your proposed technology and methodology to ensure it meets the minimum criteria for entry.

Qualification Criteria

The Scientific Advisory Board (SAB) will review and judge the registrations based on seven requirements:

1. Eligible entrants must be Indonesian or have an Indonesian partner

Eligible solutions must:
2. Be able to measure peat thickness, water volume, and/or geological formations. The measurements must be independently verified, but it is not required that these measurements were taken on peatlands or land in Indonesia
3. Be grounded in published, verified and public research

When submitting a solution to review, entrants must include:
4. Expected peat properties that the solution is capable of measuring
5. Proof of their ability to create a map at the scale of 1:50,000
6. Past accuracy of data for all properties the method is expected to measure (land use, land cover, peat thickness, ground water level and/or existence of peat domes)
7. Cost of the solution per unit area
