The European Union (EU) expressed confidence in its plan to develop aviation cooperation with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) ahead of the EU-ASEAN Aviation Summit on Feb.11-12 in Singapore.
“There is a broken journey [between EU and ASEAN countries], therefore the EU would like to increase the number of direct flights [of EU and ASEAN airlines],” EU senior coordinator for ASEAN Andreas Roettger said.
Roettger added that there were still some obstacles to overcome for ASEAN airlines to enter EU countries, especially for Indonesia. Some airlines in Indonesia have not fulfilled International Air Transport Association’s (IATA) safety standards.
After a series of fatal accidents, in 2007 the EU banned all 51 of Indonesian carriers because they were deemed unsafe. Five of the 51 airlines, including national flag carrier Garuda Indonesia, have been taken off the list. Roettger said the EU was providing technical assistance to help Indonesia meet IATA standards.
