WiSci Girls STEAM Camp

Internationally, there is a strong gender imbalance in the STEM fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. The WiSci Camp aims to help bridge that gap through access to education, mentorship opportunities and leadership training.

When and where will the 2020 camps be held?
WiSci Morocco will be hosted July 15-28 in Ifrane, Morocco at the Al Akhawayn University!

WiSci Indonesia will be hosted August 16-29 in Pontianak, Indonesia at the American Corner at the Universitas Tanjungpura Pontianak!

Who is eligible to apply for the camp?
CAMPERS: Self-identifying girls, ages 15 to 18 by the first day of the camp, with at least one year of high school remaining, who are citizens of participating countries. First generation college students are highly encouraged to apply, as well as those applicants who have not traveled internationally previously.

WiSci Indonesia Participating Countries: Indonesia, Fiji, Kiribati, Nauru, Tonga and Tuvalu, the USA and more Asian countries to be announced soon!

Applicants should have a demonstrated interest in the STEAM fields and engagement in their schools and communities – if the opportunity has been presented to them. Applicants are encouraged to share if they face any personal and/or financial barriers to furthering their interest in learning about and pursuing educational and extracurricular opportunities STEAM fields. Preference will be given to applicants who are interested in learning more about STEAM and have limited financial resources or access to other learning opportunities. Additionally, applicants should be willing to have an open mind and interest in cross-cultural learning experiences.

COUNSELORS:  Self-identifying women, ages 20 and older by the first day of the camp, currently enrolled or recently graduated from a College or University, who are citizens of participating countries. Applicants with experience caring for youth in an international, residential setting are highly encouraged to apply, as well as those applicants who have a firm belief in the value of diversity and inclusion in the STEAM fields.

Who are the WiSci camp organizers?
WiSci Camp is made possible through a public-private partnership, with many partners from around the world, including U.S. Department of State, the Millennium Challenge Corporation, and Girl Up. The 2020 WiSci Sustaining partners include Caterpillar and Google.

What is the deadline to apply to the camp?
Apply for WiSci Camps by Tuesday March 31, 2020 at 11:59 pm ET.

When will selected participants be notified?
Applicants will be notified about the outcome of their application by April 30, 2020.

What cost is there for attending the camp? Are lodging, food and activities included?
All selected 2020 participants will receive a scholarship to attend the camp free of charge, a value of over $5,000 USD. All costs associated with lodging, food, and activities during the camp are covered through the support of WiSci partners, in addition to transportation to/from the capital city of your home country (origin of departure). Participants may bring a limited amount of personal spending money for small souvenirs and snacks if they wish.

Is a passport required to apply for the program?
No. Applicants are not required to have a passport to apply for the program. However, participants will need a passport and potentially need a visa in order to travel to the host countries, once accepted.

How many students will be participating in the camp?
Approximately 100 campers at each camp.

Who will the campers interact with during the camp?
Camp participants will most closely interact with their counselors, who are also invited from the same participating countries. Counselor and campers will stay in dormitory style housing onsite. Each counselor will be responsible for a group of 10 counselors.

Camp staff will be composed of by Girl Up employees at all camps. All staff staying overnight on the camp premises are required to undergo a background check.

Girls will also interact with classroom facilitators and private-sector partner staff from organizations such as Google, who will also be present during the day to carry out STEAM programming. Additional mentors and guest speakers, including government officials, will visit the camp to interact with the camp participants.
